Lewis Murphy, Managing Director of The Dundee Gin Co.

Think of Dundee and our minds turn directly to Dundee Cake! So how does a Dundee Cake Scottish Gin Liqueur sound to you? A match made in heaven, surely?

Ginspired Scotland talks gin with Lewis Murphy, Managing Director of The Dundee Gin Co. to get an insight behind the company.

Founded in 2016, The Dundee Gin Company prides itself in creating a range of gins and liqueurs soaked in the rich heritage of the city.

Handpicked locally sourced berries and botanicals, and using traditionally made Mackays marmalade for their very popular Dundee Gin Marmalade Liqueur, The Dundee Gin Company certainly strives to produce something very unique.

What’s your favourite comment from someone tasting your gin for the first time?

That our Dundee Cake Liqueur reminded them of their Gran’s cooking.

What are you most passionate about professionally?

Making a product people haven’t tasted before and making people wonder why that was only the first time they got to taste it. Making something unique and ‘out there’ is a huge part of what motivates me.

What’s the worst advice you’ve been given?

To lower the quality of the ingredients and of the gin to make it cheaper.

If you had a robot to do one part of the gin process, which part would it be?

Stock taking! 100% stock taking! My attention span is not nearly long enough.

What makes you smile most days?

Meeting new people and getting to know new people. I am definitely a people person, so events and shows are my favourites. Tasting the gins is not too bad as well.

What does success mean for you?

To me, it is for people to love what I do, and being able to give something back to the businesses and people in the area who have supported us from the very beginning.

Who would you swap lives with for a day?

Louis Theroux. I love watching all the different and bizarre people he meets.

What subject was your favourite at school?

P.E. I am very into sport and in particular football!

What is your favourite botanical?

I really like the flavour of Rowan Berries. I have tasted a few gins with them that are very nice and some these are of my favourites.

How long can you go without checking your phone?

Only an hour or so.

Who’s your drinks industry hero?

Don Juancho who started Diplimatico creators of Canaima Gin. The gin has a very big connection with the improvements in the rain forest. The botanicals are picked by local tribes and it tastes amazing!

What can you not live without?

Chocolate. I have the biggest sweet tooth ever…

What would you like to do but are too scared?

To go on the biggest rollercoasters. I am afraid of them all so getting on any of them is a challenge for me.

What is the best compliment you’ve ever received?

That I have achieved a lot for my age and that they can see me doing a lot of good things. Being only 22 people are often surprised at the business I have and the work I put into it.

If you had limitless funds, where would you holiday?

I would pick a tiny island in the Bahamas and take no phone, laptop etc. I would just relax on the beach, swim and put my feet up with maybe a cocktail or two.
