Glasgow is Scotland’s largest city and situated along both banks of the River Clyde. It is positioned in the lower Clyde valley and known to be the furthest downstream fording point of the River Clyde. The River Clyde is the ninth longest river in the United Kingdom and the third longest Glasgow. At over 100 miles long, it flows from Lowther Hills in South Lanarkshire down to the Firth of Clyde in the West Coast. Glasgow and the Clyde Valley is predominantly a lowland area surrounded by hill ranges. The River Clyde has always played an important role in Glasgow, as the saying goes “Glasgow made the Clyde and the Clyde made Glasgow”. The city’s commerce began to flourish after the Clyde was dredged and deepened, making it navigable, which led to Glasgow’s reputation as a major industrial city. Shipbuilding and marine engineering were their industrial strengths. These days Glasgow (translates from 'Dear Green Place') is known for it's shopping, night life and museums. It's a vibrant city of culture, comedy and big personalities, but you'll be warmly welcomed as a visitor.
